Synopsis: This presentation will highlight lessons learned in restorative dentistry from both successes and failures in years of private practice and many years in teaching at the pre-doctoral level and in graduate programs in prosthodontics and operative dentistry. The presentation will delineate what works and what doesn’t work, based on experience and evidence from the dental literature. It will also discuss strategies for both personal and professional success in both practice and teaching.

After attending this presentation, awake participants should be able to:
- Understand what direct posterior restorations work and why, and understand the indications for their use.
- Understand the excellent performance of both cast gold and contemporary ceramic onlays.
- Understand there are NO indications for indirect composite resin or ceramic inlays.
- Understand the reasons for success of some contemporary ceramic materials, and the complexity of zirconia materials.
