Synopsis
Among the digital fabrication procedures, additive manufacturing or 3D printing is disrupting prosthodontic care. Printing technologies provide the capability to evolve our current dental devices, allowing the fabrication of complex geometries or multilayer restorations with varying mechanical properties. We are in a new manufacturing chapter, where we need to break the chain acquired through previous methods, if we want to embrace the gains of the printing methods, we need to think more than copying our current processes, we need to think beyond than pressing a button.
Learning objectives
- Exposition of the current situation of additive manufacturing in the world of CAD/CAM technology
- Revise the main steps of the manufacturing workflow of additive fabrication methods, including the current evidence based in printed dental devices
- Review the latest clinical applications of 3D printing in prosthodontics in which additive manufacturing provides a competitive advantage compared with our current fabricating methods
